The hieratic portrait style of Constantine is defined by his sacred countenance and its symbolic power. His gaze is upward, as if in prayer, and his chin is beardless, in the manner of Greek heroes and kings. His hair is long and wavy down his neck, and his head is adorned with a diadem, the Hellenistic symbol of divine kingship.
