JOTAPIAN

AE Antoninianus (4.13 gm)
c. 248-249 A.D.

Radiate bust of Jotapian r. / Victory advancing l. RIC 2c.

The coins of Jotapian are among the rarest of the Roman series. As a usurper against Philip I, the Arab, Jotapian's reign was extremely brief. He had led a rebellion against increased taxation from Syria and was shortly thereafter killed by his own soldiers. In Bland's corpus of Jotapian's coins, there are listed only 18 antoniniani in total.

Typical rough surfaces. Struck on a broad flan.

Extremely Rare.
